President Trump, Obama, Kamala Harris, and Biden, "Do you feel honor or dishonor?"

Do you feel dishonor?

😠 Do you feel Dishonor?

Do you feelĀ dishonorĀ when you hear a certain president’s name? Maybe it’sĀ Trump. Maybe it’sĀ Biden. DoesĀ angerĀ rise up in you, or do you instantly think of aĀ crude jokeĀ that makes you laugh? You’re not the only one.Ā Many of usĀ have wrestled withĀ dishonorĀ toward ourĀ government leaders—even to the point ofĀ hatred. But as believers, we have to ask:Ā what does God say about all this?

Proverbs 4:23Ā tells us, ā€œAbove all else,Ā guard your heart, forĀ everythingĀ you doĀ flows from it.ā€ To guard your heart means to protect the core ofĀ who you are—yourĀ values,Ā emotions,Ā decisions, andĀ beliefs—from anything that pulls you away fromĀ God’s truth. It’s like setting aĀ watchmanĀ over yourĀ soul, being careful about what youĀ let inĀ and what you allow toĀ grow. That includes the way weĀ thinkĀ andĀ speakĀ about authority figures.

Dishonor starts in the heart…

The truth is,Ā dishonorĀ starts in theĀ heartĀ and takesĀ root in the mind. That’s whyĀ Romans 12:2Ā says, ā€œDo notĀ conformĀ to theĀ patternĀ of thisĀ world, butĀ be transformedĀ by theĀ renewingĀ of yourĀ mind…ā€ This world thrives onĀ mockeryĀ andĀ division, especially when it comes toĀ politics. But we’re not called to be like the world—we’reĀ called to be like Christ.

How do we respond?

So, how do weĀ respond? We guard our hearts byĀ seeking God’s perspective, not culture’s opinion. We guard our minds byĀ filteringĀ ourĀ thoughtsĀ throughĀ the Word, not social media. And we remember verses likeĀ 1 Peter 2:17: ā€œShowĀ proper respectĀ toĀ everyone,Ā loveĀ the family ofĀ believers,Ā fearĀ God,Ā honorĀ theĀ emperor.ā€

Let Honor Be Our Default!

Honoring doesn’t meanĀ agreeingĀ withĀ everything. It means choosingĀ love,Ā humility, andĀ prayerĀ overĀ gossip,Ā hatred, andĀ slander. AsĀ Kingdom citizens, let’s be the ones who set theĀ tone—whoĀ reflect JesusĀ even in how weĀ talk about leadersĀ we don’t like. Let us guard ourĀ heartsĀ and renew ourĀ mindsĀ so thatĀ honorĀ becomes ourĀ default, not ourĀ exception.

Let’s be different. Let’s be Kingdom.

Programmed to Hate

😠 Are We Being Programmed to Hate?

Are we programmed to hate? Media isĀ everywhere. Whether it’s viralĀ TikTokĀ videos we scroll through without thinking, our favoriteĀ YouTuber, or theĀ never-ending political debatesĀ on TV, it’s hard to escape. But have you ever stopped to ask—what effect does all this media have on us?Ā And why do they call itĀ programming?

Malcolm X once said, ā€œIf you’re not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.ā€ That’s a heavy statement, but it speaks to the power of media in shaping our views and even our emotions. If you hear the same negative reports about a person or group over and over again, it’s almost impossible not to start believing it. And maybe that’s the whole point—to keep us divided, distracted, and blind to who the real enemy is.

People are waking up…

Now, a lot of people areĀ waking upĀ to the fact that the news isn’t alwaysĀ telling the truth. That’s why we hear the termĀ fake newsĀ so often. According to a survey by Pew Research Center,Ā 64% of Americans say fake news causes serious confusionĀ about basic facts. Most of us—especially younger generations—know that a lot of what we see in the media isĀ exaggerated,Ā twisted, orĀ outright false. So what do we do? Do we justĀ stop watching the newsĀ altogether to avoid beingĀ manipulated?

We become what we watch!

That’s aĀ tough question. But as Christians, we need to be mindful of what weĀ consumeĀ and how it’sĀ shaping us. Jesus said inĀ Matthew 6:22-23, ā€œThe eye is the lamp of the body. If yourĀ eyes are healthy, your whole body will beĀ full of light. But if yourĀ eyes are unhealthy, yourĀ whole body will be full of darkness.ā€ In other words, what we let into our minds affects ourĀ entire being. Are we filling ourselves withĀ truth, or are we lettingĀ darkness program us?

Fight the Right Battle

And here’s something even deeper to consider: Are we fighting the wrong battles? Ephesians 6:12 reminds us, ā€œFor we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world.ā€ The real fight isn’t against people—it’s against the unseen forces shaping this world.

So let’s be intentional about what we consume. Let’s make sure we’re feeding our minds with truth and not getting caught up in the enemy’s distractions. Stay woke—not in the world’s way, but in God’s way.

Why do we hate them?

😠 Is it okay for me to hate them?

Have you ever caught yourself feeling suddenĀ anger—or evenĀ hatred—when a certainĀ political leaderĀ appears on your screen? Maybe it’s someone whoĀ youĀ deeply disagreeĀ with, or someone the media constantlyĀ criticizes. Before you know it, you’re filled withĀ frustration… maybe even rage. But where does thatĀ hatredĀ really come from? Why do we hate them? And what does theĀ BibleĀ have to say about it?

The truth is, much of our hatred is learned—fed by what we hear, see, and consume. News outlets, social media, and even conversations with friends or co-workers often highlight the worst in our leaders. Over time, that negativity builds up, shaping our thoughts and attitudes. If people we trust show anger or hatred, it’s easy to pick up the same attitude without even realizing it.

God takes hatred seriously…

But here’s where Scripture challenges us. Most of us know Jesus’ command: ā€œLove your neighbor as yourselfā€ (Mark 12:31). But Jesus takes it even deeper. In Matthew 5:21-22, He says, ā€œYou have heard it was said… ā€˜You shall not murder…’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment.ā€ That’s intense. Jesus puts unchecked anger on the same level as murder. The Apostle John echoes this: ā€œAnyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in himā€ (1 John 3:15).

So, yes—God takes hatred seriously. But what about when our anger feels justified? What about leaders who promote evil or create suffering? Jesus didn’t leave any gray area. He said, ā€œYou have heard that it was said, ā€˜Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute youā€ (Matthew 5:43-44).

That’s tough. Pray for those weĀ disagree with? Even those we feel haveĀ caused harm?Ā Absolutely. That is theĀ heart of God. Pray for theirĀ repentance. Intercede for theirĀ salvation. And ask God that they would lead withĀ wisdomĀ andĀ righteousness.

His Kingdom calls us higher…

As citizens of God’s Kingdom, our response shouldĀ look different. Are weĀ praying for our leaders—or justĀ cursing themĀ under our breath? Are weĀ speaking life, or just adding to theĀ noise of criticism?Ā 2 Peter 3:9Ā reminds us of God’s heart: ā€œHe is patient… not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come toĀ repentance.ā€

One thing is certain—spending hours soaking in negative media will make it harder to walk in love and humility. It doesn’t mean we should ignore what’s happening in the world, but we need to stay grounded in God’s truth. His Kingdom calls us higher.

The Heart of the King

So, next time that familiar anger rises up—pause. Pray. And ask yourself, what response reflects the heart of Christ?

What is dishonor?

😮 Honoring our leaders…

Let’s be real—dishonor is everywhere, even in Christian circles. Whether it’s the ā€œLet’s Go Brandonā€ chant or making fun of the assassination attempt of President Donald Trump, it’s clear that disrespect toward government leaders has become normal. Some might say, ā€œCome on, it’s just a joke!ā€ And I’ll be honest—I’ve laughed at some of this stuff before too. But let’s take a step back and really think about it.

What Does Dishonor Actually Mean?

TheĀ Oxford DictionaryĀ defines dishonor as bringingĀ shame,Ā disgrace,Ā disrespect, orĀ discredit. Now, let’s go back to those examples. Does chanting ā€œLet’s Go Brandonā€ fall into any of those categories? What about making fun of anĀ attempted assassination? If we’re being honest, yeah,Ā they do.

But dishonor isn’t just aĀ modernĀ issue. It’s been part ofĀ American cultureĀ for a long time—whether throughĀ public criticism, political leadersĀ tearing each other down, or how theĀ media portrays them. Did you know thatĀ fourĀ U.S. presidents have been assassinated?Ā Abraham LincolnĀ (1865),Ā James A. GarfieldĀ (1881),Ā William McKinleyĀ (1901), andĀ John F. KennedyĀ (1963). And the Bible already told us this would happen: ā€œWhatĀ has been will be again, whatĀ has been done will be done again; there isĀ nothing newĀ under the sun.ā€ (Ecclesiastes 1:9).

How Should We Respond?

As Christians, how should we treat government leaders—even the ones we don’t agree with? Let’s look at what Peter said:

ā€œSubmit to every human authority because of the Lord, whether to the emperor as the supreme authority or to governors as those sent out by him to punish those who do what is evil and to praise those who do what is good.ā€ (1 Peter 2:13)

Now, here’s the crazy part—Peter was talking aboutĀ Nero. This guy wasĀ no friend to Christians. Historical accounts say that after theĀ Great Fire of Rome,Ā NeroĀ blamed ChristiansĀ for it and used that as an excuse to have themĀ killed—fed to lions and worse. Yet Peter still told believers to submit to authority.Ā Why?

Peter wasn’t saying, ā€œAgree with everything your leaders do.ā€ He wasn’t saying, ā€œObey them even when they go against God.ā€ But he was making a point—respect the position, even if you can’t respect the person. That doesn’t mean weĀ stay silentĀ about corruption or evil. But it does mean we handle it in a way thatĀ reflects Christ.

Honoring God While Resisting Evil

Martin Luther King Jr. said it well:

ā€œOne has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.ā€

This principle is all over Scripture. Take Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego—they refused to bow to King Nebuchadnezzar’s golden statue, even though it meant getting thrown into a fiery furnace. (Daniel 3:16-28) But notice how they did it. They didn’t curse him out, mock him, or start a rebellion. They stood firm, but they did it with honor.

How Do We Look Different?

DishonorĀ isĀ everywhere. It’s in theĀ news, onĀ social media, inĀ memes, and even inĀ conversationsĀ with friends. But as followers ofĀ Christ, we’re called to beĀ different. Peter’s words and these Bible stories give us a picture of what theĀ Kingdom looks likeĀ when it comes to honoring leaders.

So let’s choose to beĀ set apart. Let’sĀ stand against corruption, but let’s do it in a way that stillĀ reflects honor. It won’t always be easy, but if we’re serious aboutĀ living for Christ, it’sĀ worth it.

Dishonoring Government Leaders

😮 I was shocked when IĀ found out….

Folks, we’re living in someĀ crazyĀ times. With technology and social media, we haveĀ instantĀ access toĀ news,Ā politics, andĀ entertainmentĀ like never before. In some ways, that’s been aĀ blessing, but in other ways, it’sĀ tearing us apart. One thing that’s become way too normal in this digital age isĀ dishonoring government leaders.

But what does that actually mean? Is it just about not saying anythingĀ badĀ about them? Or is thereĀ somethingĀ deeper? Does honoring a leader mean we have toĀ agreeĀ with themĀ or evenĀ voteĀ for them? And what if their policies goĀ againstĀ our beliefs? What do we do then?

I was still dishonoring them…

I’ll be real with you, I used to have no problemĀ disrespectingĀ andĀ ridiculingĀ political leaders. Before I gave my life to Christ, I’dĀ mockĀ them, tear themĀ down, and notĀ thinkĀ twiceĀ about it. Even after I got saved, IĀ didn’t realizeĀ that I was still dishonoring them in subtle ways throughĀ jokes, harshĀ criticism, and even hiddenĀ hatredĀ in my heart.

Take this journey with me

But then I started digging into what theĀ Bible actually says about this. And when I tell you itĀ convictedĀ me to my core IĀ meanĀ it. I wasĀ shockedĀ atĀ just how short I fell fromĀ what God commands of us inĀ His Word. That’s why I want to take you on thisĀ journeyĀ with me.

In this series, we’re going straight to theĀ WordĀ of GodĀ to see what God says aboutĀ honoring leadersĀ even the ones weĀ don’t agreeĀ with. It’s a tough topic, but anĀ importantĀ one. So the real question isĀ are we willing to check ourĀ own hearts?Ā Are we ready to letĀ GodĀ correctĀ usĀ in this area?

Click the video belowĀ
